The goal of the foundation is to train Iñupiat students to enter the professional workforce prepared for any job, especially those common to the North Slope region. AEF funds all applicants who meet eligibility requirements and need financial assistance. Scholarship amounts are based on financial need.

Application Deadlines
Scholarship applications must be received on or before the following deadlines:

These are the maximum amounts for quarter and semester. What is awarded is based on financial need.
–Competitive Awards–
Anaġi Leadership Award
The Anaġi Leadership Award was created to acknowledge the leadership of Arctic Slope Regional Corporation’s former president, Jacob Anaġi Adams. This award covers tuition, fees, books, room and board, and shall be used for college or training expenses.
The maximum amount for this award is up to $24,000 per school year (fall, spring, spring quarter, and summer terms) and is based on the student financial need. The scholarship will be awarded for four (4) consecutive school years for full or part-time status or enrollment. The scholarship will be awarded beginning the fall term following the deadline. One scholarship is awarded each year.

Application procedure
Students may apply for this scholarship by submitting the following documents:
• Completing the Anaġi Leadership Award application AND regular Arctic Education Foundation scholarship application.
• Submitting two letters of recommendation.
• Submitting a copy of your high school transcript and college/training transcripts (if applicable).
• Submitting a personal essay describing your leadership experience, goals for college/training, and plans after graduating. See essay guidelines below.
Personal Essay
Essay guidelines:
• Write an essay describing your leadership experience. Topics are not limited to, but may include: Student clubs/organizations, student government, special learning opportunities, seminars, workshops or training, Elders/youth representation, Alaska Federation of Natives representation, whaling crew member responsibilities, subsistence activities, community involvement, and any extra-curricular activities.
• Describe your goals of attending college/training.
• Discuss your plans after completion of college/training.
Aveogan Leadership Award
The Aveogan Leadership Award was created to acknowledge the leadership of Arctic Slope Regional Corporation’s former board member who also held an executive management position with ASRC since 1972, Dr. Oliver Aveogan Leavitt.
A whaling captain, a fierce champion for the rights of the North Slope Iñupiat, a devoted public servant, and an avid Barrow Whalers fan, Dr. Leavitt was a massively influential force in the growth of ASRC and a perpetual advocate for the rights of the people of the North Slope.
The maximum amount for this award is up to $28,000 per school year (fall, spring, spring quarter, and summer terms) and is based on the student financial need. The scholarship will be awarded for four (4) consecutive school years for full or part-time status or enrollment. The scholarship will be awarded beginning the fall term following the deadline. One scholarship is awarded each year.

Essay guidelines:
• Write an essay describing your leadership experience. Topics are not limited to but may include: Your understanding of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971 (ANCSA), Elders/youth representation, Alaska Federation of Natives representation, whaling crew member responsibilities, subsistence activities, community involvement, and any extra-curricular activities.
• Describe your goals of attending college/training.
• Discuss your plans after completion of college/training.
Ivalu Scholarship Award
The Ivalu Scholarship was created to honor eligible applicants who are making noteworthy and influential contributions to their community through their community cultural service commitment of their personal time to projects and activities which strongly incorporate the Iñupiaq values. Applicant selected should serve as a role model of implementing and following the 12 Iñupiaq Core Values while performing community cultural service activities. The maximum amount for this award is up to $15,000 per school year (fall, spring, spring quarter, and summer terms) and is based on the student financial need. The scholarship will be awarded for four (4) consecutive school years for full or part-time status or enrollment. The scholarship will be awarded beginning the fall term following the deadline. One scholarship is awarded each year.

Criteria
• Must be an original ASRC shareholder or a lineal descendant of an original ASRC shareholder.
• Must have a high school diploma or GED.
• Must maintain a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) throughout the cycle of the award, and must currently have a 2.0 GPA, if already admitted to a college, university, or training institution.
• Must plan to enter or currently be enrolled in a college, university, or vocational training institution.
• Must have a demonstrated cultural community service commitment through activities, abilities, and effort which involve the 12 Iñupiaq core values.

Personal Essay
Essay guidelines:
• Write a two to four page, double spaced essay describing your cultural community service commitments which you have engaged in and describe which Iñupiaq Value(s) have been utilized while doing those activities. Topics will have a strong community service component such as whaling crew activities, Iñupiaq dance groups, church volunteerism, fire department volunteerism, Boys and Girls Club volunteerism, etc., and should also include all other activities not identified previously which have a strong relation to the Iñupiaq Values.
• Describe your goals of attending college/training.
• Discuss your plans after completion of college/training.
At-Large High School Scholarship Award
The At-Large High School Scholarship Award will be made only to qualified AEF applicants, who at the time of award: (a) are seniors graduating from high school; and (b) plan to continue their education by enrolling in a qualified postsecondary educational institution or training facility.
This is a one-time award. Six (6) At-Large High School Scholarship Awards will be awarded in the amount of $2,000 for the year (fall, spring, spring quarter, and summer terms) and is based on the college’s financial need sheet.. Candidates must display superior academic performance, demonstrated leadership ability and/or community service achievements. Superior performance, ability and/or achievement requirements will be measured by objective criteria (e.g. grade point average, essay, leadership positions held or service projects performed, letters of recommendation, etc.)

Eligibility
• Current high school seniors attending high school
• Anticipating completion of high school diploma at the time of application
• Carrying a minimum 2.0 GPA at the time of application
• Must be an original ASRC shareholder or a direct lineal descendant of an original ASRC shareholder
• Must plan to enter or currently be enrolled in college or training
• Must have been involved in school and community extracurricular activities
• Must have demonstrated leadership qualities throughout high school
Personal essay guidelines
• Topics should include, but are not limited to: student programs; student government; student travel; learning opportunities;
training; Elders/Youth representation; Alaska Federation of Natives representation; whaling crew member participation;
subsistence activities; community involvement; and any extracurricular activities.
• Tell us your personal, professional and family background.
• Describe your goals of attending college/training and what leadership role you see yourself in upon completion.
• Essays must be three-to-four pages, double spaced.
Application materials
• Completion of the At-Large High School Scholarship Award application and regular Arctic Education Foundation scholarship application.
• High school diploma must be submitted before award is funded
• High school transcript.
• Two (2) letters of recommendation; letters from relatives will not be accepted.
–North Slope High School Nominating Awards–
North Slope Graduating Seniors
Arctic Education Foundation (AEF) awards annual scholarships to graduating North Slope high school seniors who are ASRC shareholders or descendants of original ASRC shareholders. These awards are to be used for college or training expenses, and are in addition to other funding available through AEF.
High School Leadership Awards will be made only to qualified AEF applicants, who at the time of award: (a) have attended one (1) or more years of high school in the North Slope Borough School District; (b) are seniors graduating from a North Slope Borough high school; and (c) plan to continue their education by enrolling in a qualified postsecondary educational institution. Each of the awards are one (1) time awards.
Three (3) High School Leadership Awards will be awarded for each North Slope village (Anaktuvuk Pass, Atqasuk, Kaktovik, Nuiqsut, Pt. Hope, Pt. Lay, Wainwright and Utqiaġvik) totaling twenty-four (24) awards. Award recipients will be selected from candidates who have been nominated by a member of the candidate’s high school faculty or administration because of such candidate’s superior academic performance, demonstrated leadership ability and/or community service achievements. Superior performance, ability or achievement will be measured by objective criteria (e.g. grade point average, specific leadership positions held or service projects performed, etc.)
